Swereg Bridge: A Charm by the Brantas River

A unique bridge hidden behind the cheerful Sengkaling Recreational Park in Malang Regency. It's unique because this bridge resembles a narrow secret path, yet it must withstand the strong currents of the Brantas River.
This small bridge is not merely a connection between Sengkaling and Tegalgondo, but also a silent witness to the life of the Malang residents, especially in the morning and evening. This bridge will always be bustling with residents going back and forth, who uniquely have to take turns crossing the bridge. Indeed, they must take turns because the bridge is too narrow for even two motorcycles.
Here are some unique facts about the Swereg Bridge.
- It is located above the Brantas River, the longest river in East Java and the second-longest on Java Island.
- The bridge has become a popular shortcut for students of the University of Muhammadiyah Malang (UMM) and residents looking to avoid traffic on the main road, such as those headed towards Batu City or further to Surabaya.
- The Swereg Bridge was initially designed as part of a dam to control the flow of the Brantas River, not as a public road. However, locals have utilized it as an alternative route or "rat route" for motorcyclists and pedestrians.
- On November 4, 2021, the bridge was severely damaged due to a flash flood that hit the Greater Malang area. Nearly all of the bridge structure, with a total length of 30 meters, collapsed and was severely damaged. This severe damage was primarily due to materials carried by the floodwaters.
- Repair of the bridge was carried out in 2022 by the East Java Provincial Government (Pemprov Jatim).
- Around the bridge, there are several simple coffee stalls that have become a new economic driver for the local community
